Honeymoon in the Maldives: what to expect

You know that paradise you always dreamt of? That one where you can be away from everything, that makes you feel alive and part of this world? Or that one where you don’t need to think of anything but eating, sleeping, snorkeling, diving and laying on the sand beach? Well, I spent my honeymoon on a place exactly like this: the Maldives.

A trip to the Maldives is all about the island you will stay, which means the resort of your choice, so you might want to make a little research to find one that matches your needs. After all, when you arrive there, you will not be able to go nowhere else but the sea.

Before you go, don’t worry so much about packing your suitcase. All you will need is a bathing suit, sunscreen, flip-flops and camera. Apart from that, be ready to relax and enjoy what the Indian Ocean has to offer, and make amazing memories of the time spent on this paradise.

You will be treated like royalty – especially if you stay on a Water Villa – from the welcoming until your breakfast brought to you every morning. Expect waking up and opening your eyes to turquoise water, eating amazing food, relaxing massages at the spa, drink wine on your hot tub under the sky, afternoon lunch on your room, watermelon juice made especially for you, swimming with sharks, rays and turtles, a ride from your room to the restaurant, snorkeling around the island and diving with whale sharks.

Relish each sunset and every wave noise when you go to bed. You will not need a watch, unless you do not want to miss the yoga class or your snorkeling tour. Enjoy the sun, and even the rain. Don’t ever feel like you have been too long in the water, unless you get sunburn. Observe the sky. Appreciate the quiet and peace of the underwater, and don’t be scared if you bump into a Blacktip Shark, they will be even more scared than you and will quickly go away. Cherish these moments; they will quickly pass by.

After the first 2 days you will probably know all the other guests, bartenders, waiters, water sports instructors, restaurant’s chef and even the marine life that surrounds your resort. The great thing about it, is that you will not want to leave anymore, or is that a bad thing? A recent survey said that 31% of the tourists in the Maldives are repeaters!

By the end of your stay, all staff will remember at least which room you are staying; the bartenders will know your favorite drink and you will not even need to ask for it anymore; you will feel like your room is your new home and realize how easy human beings get used to a life like that. Oh, you will probably gain some “unexpected” weight too, don’t worry they might go away, but not your memories.

My tips for the paradise:

  • Book your resort in advance: you might get an early booking discount.
  • All-inclusive is always the best idea.
  • If your resort offers to book your seaplane, accept it. They already know everything about it, its less worry for you.
  • You might think that 5 days is too much to stay on an island, but once you are there, time flies. Stay as long as you can!
